See this speech right here? Nobody can’t tell me Issa Rae isn’t the G.O.A.T.
What we’ve been taught about humility, especially as women, is fundamentally flawed.
Humility is NOT dimming your light so others can shine. It’s not about down playing your strengths so other people can feel comfortable. It’s not about disappearing into the background and hoping other people talk about you favorably; God forbid you talk about yourself. It’s not even about “giving God the glory” and not shining the spotlight on yourself, because you ARE God’s glory made manifest! If you’re not shining your light for the world to see then what was the purpose? Who lights a lamp and puts it under a table?
Humility is simply doing your best at all times and giving it your all, even and especially under adverse circumstances.
Think about the earth beneath your feet.
The word “humble” comes from the Latin humilis "lowly, humble," literally "on the ground," from humus "earth,".
No matter how much the earth is trod upon, no matter how much sun beats on it, or rain wets it, no matter how muddy or barren it gets, it’s still...earth. Unchangeable in its purpose, it still nourishes and supports life in some way, form or fashion.
It just does its job.
It doesn’t refuse to work- on the contrary, earth works with whatever it is given and produces fruit accordingly. It waits patiently during barren times, when there are few resources, and gives abundantly during fertile times, when resources abound.
That’s what it means to be humble- to take what we are given and faithfully produce fruit accordingly, and to continue to do our best and never give up or waiver during the tough times.
It has absolutely nothing to do with accepting awards or accolades, and if you are humble your time in the spotlight is certain.
And then you can act a damn fool like Issa did, because the records will show that you DID that!
